Diagnosing early screenouts from near-wellbore failure

Seeing early screenouts with jagged pressure in Stage 1–3 of a laminated siltstone at about 3,100 m TVD; DFIT indicates Shmin about 0.72 psi/ft and Pp about 0.47 psi/ft, Young’s about 38 GPa, but breakdown is 10.6–10.9 ksi and the signature looks like bedding-plane slip/tortuosity near the wellbore… Has anyone mitigated this by orienting 60° phasing to SHmax and bumping to 6 spf, or by a short pre-pad to stabilize the borehole before the main pad?

Same rock vibe at about 3,100 m — our early screenouts with that “bedding-plane slip” signature eased when we kept 60° to SHmax but went 3 spf with big‑hole charges and gave it a 1–2 bbl/ft slick pad at a slow ramp before sand. Run a step‑down on Stage 1 and target about 300–500 psi perf friction; bumping to 6 spf just made tortuosity worse for us. If a couple clusters still misbehave, a quick CT jet straddle pre‑breakdown fixed them cheap.

Agree with @mperry1973; 25 bbl 7.5% HCl spearhead plus 30‑sec rate hold smoothed that ‘jagged’ pressure.

Keep the 60° to SHmax but don’t jump to 6 spf — 2–3 spf with deep‑penetrators, a 30–45 s rate hold right after the 10.6–10.9 ksi breakdown, then a gentle 100‑mesh ramp (0.1→0.3 ppg) killed the “bedding‑plane slip” spikes for us. If it still jitters, offset the gun 10–15° on Stage 1 only to reduce perf wash, @kendra_fay92.
