When the caliper log heckles you

Today the 6.125-in lateral ballooned to 7.3 in right at the stress turnaround, and the caliper yelled “nice breakout, champ.” I’m over here re-deriving Mohr–Coulomb and nudging the mud weight window by 0.2 ppg while the frac crew asks if Hoek–Brown is a latte size.

Our 6-in went 7.4 at the flip last month; a 0.1–0.2 ppg bump and easing RPM through that 60 ft kept the caliper from saying ‘oval is the new round.’ If it’s bedding-driven more than stress, a quick backream pass and re-log that spot worked better for us, per @geomech_greg.

Quick fix that’s saved me at the stress turnaround: pump a 25-bbl hi-vis sweep dosed about 7 lb/bbl fine/medium LCM, then ream through with 25% lower WOB and the caliper quits yelling “nice breakout, champ.” If your MWD/screens hate LCM, a brief 5% flow rollback for one stand works too without messing with that +0.2 ppg window.

I’ve kept the caliper from heckling by slowing the MPD choke ramp right before the stress flip so ECD stays flat when RPM swings, @toolpusher rolled his eyes but it worked. No MPD? A short‑gauge near‑bit stabilizer stiffened the BHA and the breakout didn’t grow.
